My Story - The people who shaped and influenced my future - My Dad
My Dad was a bodybuilder. He had a gym in my grandad's garage. Young men from the neighborhood would come and work out with my Dad.
He once told me that he would train his calves so hard that he would be unable to walk for days.
We watched every bodybuilding competition there was on tv. Arnold Schwarzenegger was my hero. (Yep, I know, right :) We would have a competition between the two of us to see which competitor would win. Dad always won and would pick the exact first, second, and third places every time.
Afterwards we would discuss why those competitors won and not the others for example that guys’ calves are too small in relation to his upper body etc.
It was always about balance; upper body to lower body ratio.
Having those discussions with my Dad made me understand and appreciate what it took for each man to have a sculpted body, pre-steroid abuse. It probably was the catapult of why I became a Personal Trainer, Group fitness instructor, and later a Pilates Instructor.
These are the personal trainers and group fitness instructors that I worked with from 1994 to 2000 at Health and Racquet Krugersdorp, South Africa.
