Basic mat group classes
Our Basic mat classes are for those who have never done Pilates before or those who started Pilates, but it’s been a while.
In our Basic mat classes, we focus on the foundation of Pilates practice. The pace of the class is slow and steady, giving you time to connect your mind to your body.
Laying down the foundation of Pilates.
You will learn how to work safely to avoid injury like where to position your head correctly to avoid neck pain, how to relax your shoulders to prevent neck and shoulder pain and which muscles you’ll need to do so.
You will also learn how to breathe deeply, implementing the Pilates breathe, to use the full capacity of your lungs and ribs as you. Each movement starts with an inhale as you initialise the movement with an exhale to engage your lower abdominals to stabilise you as begin to move.
Classes are purposely kept small for individual attention.
The class starts with a warm up mobilising and stretching the neck, shoulders, back and hips.
The Pilates exercises you will learn are:
Ab prep with feet on the floor
Single leg stretch prep
Obliques with feet on the floor
Crisscross prep
Leg changes
Circles in the air with bent knees
Swan prep
Breast stroke prep
Clam and so many more.
The classes end with a cooldown, stretching the muscles worked and a time for relaxation and deep breathing to finish.
At InHouse Pilates, we practice quality over quantity. In our Basic mat classes we do less repetitions of each exercise, this gives you time to develop strength, stamina and endurance and you won’t leave the class feeling exhausted.
If you’re still unsure which class to attend, read this blog ‘Should I take Basic Mat classes or just join a Beginner class.”

Before the class: Joining the class
Click the class link at least 10 minutes before the session and ensure that you have the necessary equipment, towel, water or cushion if using, ready to go.
Wait in the virtual waiting room until I admit you.
Before the class begins, I will ask if you have any injuries or problems that day.
I prefer to teach without music for better audio clarity.
The classes run for and hour and each class starts with a warm up and ends with a cool down.
-
Use a Pilates mat on hard floors for spine and hip protection.
If on carpet, a bath towel can serve as a substitute.
For Basic mat classes, you may need pillows to rest your head on and a cushion between your knees.
As you progress through your Pilates practice, you may want to invest in hand weights, a Pilates ball, a soft ball and a resistance band. Later, in our Advanced/Intermediate classes, you will need a Pilates circle too.
These small props/apparatus are inexpensive and will used for the life time of your Pilates practice.

You will need either a smart phone, or iPad or television in which to stream the class onto.
You will also need a reliable WIFI connection.
Start by downloading Zoom onto your device at least a day before to avoid delays. (For a step-by-step guide on ‘How to download Zoom to join a live-streaming Pilates class’, click here.)
“I have been doing Pilates with Charmaine for about three years now. I love how I feel now. I have so much more flexibility and confidence in what I am able to do. I find that I am sitting and holding myself better as I go about my daily activities. Before doing Pilates I needed a regular massage, constantly feeling like I had tight sore muscles. Now I rarely need to get a massage as Pilates classes regularly work on all muscles.
Thanks Charmaine for the relaxed and happy classes.”
