Should I take Basic Mat classes or just join a Beginner class?
Yes, absolutely! Attending the Basic Mat classes will teach you the basics of Pilates that no other class teaches, but will be referred back to all the time.
Think of the Basic Mat Classes like the groundwork of a building. Without proper groundwork, the building will crumble.
My favorite analogy is an apple core. Without the actual core of the apple that makes up the flesh and skin of the apple, the entire apple would not exist. The same can be said about Pilates.
Without knowing the lingo, or the name of the exercises, which muscles you would use to stabilize, which muscles you would use to move, you could just end up ‘flapping around.”
Pilates is well known for its “less is more’ and “quality over quantity” approach. When you do the Basic Mat, you would only do a couple of each exercise and do these exercises until you can manage each exercise properly, before moving onto the next level which is the Beginners.
So like anything, you need to start at the beginning with baby-steps, crawl before you can walk, etc. Just as a baby learns to walk holding onto mama, so you too will grasp each basic element during the Basic Mat classes and that’s why the Basic Mat classes are a must!!
